angel is a new label ran from Lisbon by Violet. A sister label to naive and naivety, angel tries to portray the party series of the same name - a bass-led, smoke-drenched celebration where the main room is dedicated to dnb and the second explores adjacent stylistic fringes like dubstep, trip hop, dub or jazz.
The first release on angel, similarly variegated, comes from berlin-via-seattle's Gag Reflex, who you may know from her EP on naivety a couple of years ago or from her impeccable DJ skills or even from her work in Seattle, where she ran BLOOM, a transfeminist night that helped shape the city's more inclusive corners of its dance music underground.
Lush is an EP that comes as a rarity when analysed by a lens of range and heartfelt originality. The opener 'Ring' takes us on a 160 (and 80, when it goes half-step) bpm cornucopia of percussion and breaks punctuated by a romantic, Art Of Noise-esque stab. 'Clay' taps into other realms within a similar tempo, a broken kick pattern driving us through a scenic - and twisted - industrial sound design route where drone and melody are but the same thing.
'Nylon' brings us the first four to the floor moment, with tightly programmed hats and a noisy, hair-raising bass lead. An ode to dancefloor tension, 'Teeth' is another display of impressively programmed drums and percussion, serving as a base to a mantra-like synth and reverberating screams that fill us with a sense of urgency. 'Neoprene' delves unabashedly into dubstep territories, giving us detailed yet somehow minimalistic beats a la Skull Disco and a wobbling bassline as nasty as they came in 2006. The EP closes beautifully with 'Pressure', all lush pads and harmonies over a crisp trip-hop-referencing beat - it's Gag Reflex, typically generous, winding us down after one of the wildest rides we've been on. Welcome to angel.
